About Maria Hernandez

Oaxaca is home, and the work is tied to what I can touch here: clay, thread, paper, and the coast when I travel for the water pictures. Sculpture is the center. I like a form that holds a pose after I leave the room. Weaving is the patient work, the one that makes me count. Pointillist drawings are how I study pattern without pretending it is only decoration. Underwater photographs are the trips. I do not separate craft from art in my own head, and I will not perform that separation for a label. If you want to know the work, look at the hands in it. They are usually mine.
