About Hiroshi Tanaka
Kyoto is a careful city, and I try not to turn that care into nostalgia. Abstract painting is where I put the structure of a place without painting the postcard. Pointillist ink is slower and quieter, a way to build tone dot by dot until the sheet holds. Textile work comes from watching how cloth actually behaves, not from a pattern I downloaded. Underwater photographs are the trips away from home, a different kind of quiet. I work alone most days. I like the responsibility of that. If a piece needs a long explanation, I usually have not finished looking at it yet.
