Lyon is where I learned to look at ordinary rooms until they became worth painting. I like realism because it will not let me hide a weak drawing. If the cup is wrong, the cup is wrong. Sculpture is the same lesson in a heavier material. I cast small forms, then I go back to paper and try to catch a pose before it settles. Decorative work, the candles and small objects, is how I rest my eyes without leaving the studio. I keep hours that look dull from the outside. That is the job. If a picture feels quiet, that was the aim, not a failure of drama.
